Intent

At Chalk Ridge, our intent for Modern Foreign Languages (MFL) is to foster an engaging and inclusive environment where every pupil is empowered to develop their linguistic skills and cultural understanding. We aim to instil in our students a lifelong love of languages, enabling them to communicate effectively, appreciate diversity, and participate in a globalised world. Our MFL curriculum is designed to ensure that:

  • Cultural Awareness: Pupils gain a rich understanding of the culture, history, and traditions associated with the target language, which informs their linguistic development.

  • Communication Skills: Pupils are equipped with the ability to listen, speak, read, and write in the target language, ensuring they can communicate in a variety of contexts.

  • Cognitive Development: Language learning stimulates cognitive development, enhances problem-solving skills, and supports overall academic achievement.

  • Inclusive Practice: All pupils, regardless of background or ability, have access to high-quality MFL provision that caters to individual needs and promotes confidence.

Implementation

To achieve our intent, we have implemented a structured and dynamic MFL programme that is aligned with the National Curriculum by using the scheme provided by Language Angels. However, we also ensure that this scheme has been tailored to meet the needs of our pupils. Key elements of our implementation strategy include:

  • Curriculum Design: The MFL curriculum is structured to provide progressive, age-appropriate pathways for language acquisition, focusing on the primary language of French. Lessons are thematic and interwoven with cultural contexts, incorporating songs, stories, and real-life situations to enhance relevance and interest.

  • High-Quality Teaching: Our staff are trained in the latest pedagogical practices for language teaching and utilise a range of strategies, including immersion, role play, and interactive activities, to create an experiential learning environment. Continuous professional development ensures all teachers are confident and knowledgeable in delivering MFL.

  • Assessment and Feedback: Regular formative assessments are integrated into the curriculum to monitor pupils' progress and identify areas for improvement. Verbal feedback is routinely provided, alongside targeted support and resources tailored to individual learning styles and needs.

Impact

The impact of our MFL programme is evident through a range of measures that demonstrate the effectiveness of our intent and implementation:

  • Pupil Progress: Regular pupil conferencing during our foundation monitoring shows that pupils make consistent progress in their language skills.

  • Confidence and Engagement: Pupils exhibit increased confidence in speaking and listening skills, as evidenced by their participation in class discussions and performances. Feedback from pupil voice initiatives indicates a high level of enthusiasm for learning languages.

  • Cultural Appreciation: Pupils demonstrate a broader understanding and appreciation for different cultures, as shown in project work and subject-related activities.
