Computing
Intent
At Chalk Ridge, our intent for the Computing curriculum is to ensure that all pupils develop computational thinking and the necessary digital skills to thrive in an increasingly digital world. We aim to equip our learners with a comprehensive understanding of computer science, information technology, and digital literacy. Our curriculum intent focuses on:
-
Enabling Lifelong Learning: We want our pupils to become confident and responsible users of technology who can adapt to and succeed in a rapidly evolving digital society.
-
Fostering Creativity and Innovation: By engaging in hands-on learning experiences, pupils will use programming, data analysis, and digital content creation to express their creativity and solve real-world problems.
-
Promoting Digital Citizenship: We strive to cultivate a sense of ethical responsibility and respect for others online. Pupils will learn about online safety, the importance of protecting personal information, and how to engage positively in digital communities.
Implementation
For the implementation of our Computing curriculum, we have chosen to follow the scheme of learning provided by the National Centre for Computing Education because it is rooted in a structured and cohesive approach that encompasses the National Curriculum's requirements. However, we are adapting the scheme to match our Chalk Ridge Way and so that we can ensure that we are providing flexibility to cater to the diverse needs of our learners. Key components of our implementation include:
- Curriculum Design: Our curriculum is designed over key stages, ensuring a progression of skills and knowledge that builds upon previous learning. Pupils learn through a range of contexts, including robotics, programming languages, and the use of various software applications. Each unit of work is aligned with clear learning objectives and success criteria.
- Interactive and Engaging Teaching Methods: We employ a variety of teaching strategies that promote active learning. This includes project-based learning, collaborative group work, and the integration of cross-curricular themes, allowing pupils to see the relevance of Computing in different subjects and real-world scenarios.
- Professional Development: Staff receive ongoing professional development to ensure they are up-to-date with the latest technological advancements and teaching methodologies. This builds staff confidence in delivering high-quality Computing lessons and encourages innovation in the classroom.
- Assessment and Feedback: We employ formative assessment strategies to monitor pupil progress and inform future teaching. Children are provided with feedback that is constructive, specific, and aimed at helping them to understand their strengths and areas for improvement. The Computing lead also meets with a group of children from across all year groups during our half-termly foundation monitoring to ensure that pupil voice is also used to support the development of the subject.
Impact
The impact of our Computing curriculum at Chalk Ridge is evident in multiple facets of pupil development and engagement. We measure the success of our intent and implementation in the following ways:
-
Pupil Achievement: This achievement is reflected in their confidence and competence in using Computing skills across the curriculum.
-
Engagement and Enjoyment: Pupil voice surveys indicate high levels of engagement and enjoyment in Computing lessons.
-
Digital Literacy and Citizenship: Pupils demonstrate a strong understanding of digital citizenship principles. They apply their knowledge of online safety in practical scenarios and show respectful online behaviour, contributing positively to digital communities.
-
Transition and Preparedness for Future Learning: Our pupils are well-prepared for the next stage of their education. They leave Chalk Ridge with a solid foundation in Computing that will serve them both academically and in their personal lives, particularly as future citizens in a technology-driven society.
In conclusion, our Computing curriculum embodies our commitment to providing a high-quality educational experience that prepares pupils for the digital future while instilling a sense of responsibility in their digital interactions.
